Papa Joe Celebrates 82 Trips around the Sun

100_7480.JPG (1720018 bytes)

Spring is coming.  I picked up Dan, our Pittsburgh Goalie, at Bradley and took him to Pekin to watch Michelle play in an indoor U-18 softball tournament.  My granddaughter is selling $10 squares for a fund raiser for her new team.  There will be several $100 pay outs based on lotto numbers.

Papa Joe Breaks his Record!

Romeoville, IL
February 10, 2012

Attendance: 23

The first 82 year old to play in a Duffer Game!

Papa Joe became the first 82 year old Duffer to play in a game.  He has been breaking his own record every year.  Joe had 3 assists and celebrated by making a rare trip to Buffalo Wild Wings.  He couldn't talk his sons into joining him.  That may be because he burned them 2 years ago when he told them he would meet them

Joe was ready to buy some beers, but his sons  didn't show up.

at Wild Wings and buy them a beer after he took his wife home.  Dee was in the stands watching the whole game with a blanket and a rosary.  Joe never made it to Wild Wings that night.  His wife may have  made  him an offer that he couldn't refuse, or maybe he didn't want to use up his points on a trip to the bar since he was saving them for a trip to Nashville. (He never got the points needed for that trip) The February 10th game featured a plethora of shameless goals.  There were 3 hat tricks and 10 goals by each team.  The Reds had a 4-3-2-1 countdown.  Tweedy had 4, Nick the Prick had 3, Drago had 2 and Terry had 1 with several blocked shots.  The Bookie fired a beautiful ice hugging pass to Beak who redirected it right toward Brian, but Terry blocked Beak's shot.  Beak said, "You blocked my shot!"  Terry replied, "I blocked 2 that shift." The Brain laughed and said, "Thank You."   The Whites had a more diversified attack, getting goals from 7 different guys.  The Czar had 3, T&A had 2 and Tommy Z, Monkey Rench, Cowboy Joe, Lil' Bro and Thor had solo goals. Lil T&A had an assist on Lil' Bro"s goal. The Brain wants Fruit Cake back on defense, since T&A was a  Minus 6!

Memorable Moments:

  • The Czar took some lip from the Red bench when he sailed a floater in from the point.  He was quick to reply, "I know Eddie stops all the hard shots, so I thought I would try a change up."
  • Lil'Bro Maz had an unassisted Klinger Krash when he tripped over the face off circle.  He looked up to see if Rembrandt was around.  (Rembrandt dropped Lil'Bro with a warm up shot on New Year's Day last year, then he blasted him off of the blue line on opening night this season.) He could get the Klinger Krash if he would ever show up to the Picnic.  (You know the winner must be present)
  • The Czar also had an unassisted Klinger Krash that drew more abuse from the Red Bench, but he got up and fired a bullet off of the post and in for a goal.  He later tied the game in the final minute. you know what they say, He who laughs last didn't get the joke.

Columbus Trip is a write off!

Read Dr. Andrew Weil tips to Optimum Health. (Below)

Papa started celebrating on Wednesday

This is Duffer News Number 665!  Next week, get ready for 666!

Dr. Andrew Weil has a book, 8 weeks to Optimum Health. In his book, he outlines a program that will help you achieve optimum health. Here is his program.
Take a break from watching the news. TV news is a depressant. No Duffer has ever watched the news on a road trip.
Get away from depressing people, try to spend time with people that make you laugh. Where else can you go to church and see a guy come out with toilet paper flowing out of his butt? (That happened on our bus trip to Hayward when we picked up Papa Joe, Brinks and Muzzy from Sunday Mass. The small town people were amazed to see a huge luxury coach outside of their church. )
Go to a Hot Tub and sweat. We spent many hours in the Hot Tubs in Hayward, Detroit, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Nashville, Toronto and Green Bay.
Go for a 25 minute walk That downhill walk in Peoria was only 15 minutes, but it took 30 minutes to get back up the hill after dinner and a few beers.
Exercise sensibly then take in plenty of fluids. We play two fast paced hockey games and take in plenty of fluids on every road trip.
Have some garlic and olive oil. If you ever went to a team dinner, you know that the The King' choice of restaurant will give you plenty of garlic and olive oil.
My blood pressure goes down 40 points on Monday after road trips.
You can write off road trips as a health expense.

You can also write it off as a hobby

Duffer Trivia Answers

A Duffer Trivia web page was created

  • Magoo was the 3rd Duffer to get the Most Improved Player award. What year was that? What was his Nickname then? John "F. Lee" Landry received the award in 1979

  • Who were the other winners of that prestigious award?  (That award was discontinued when we stopped improving) 1973, Wally Kraft was the first to win the MIP. There were no winners until 1977, when  Mike "The Painter" Macica was awarded the Most Improved Player trophy at the 1st Annual Duffer Picnic at Argonne Woods. Paul The Commander Jankowski received the award in 1978.  Gene "Thor" Miller won it in 1980. Tom "Slime Dog" Kowalkowski and Jim "Titz" Michalson were awarded the trophy in 1981. Frank Presecki won it in 1982.  In 1983 The King was presented with the “King’s Meaningless Trophy” and Bill "Klinger" Giffune was awarded the Most Improved Player trophy at the 7th Annual Duffer Picnic at Argonne Woods. Stump Barczynski is the first commoner to receive the “King’s Meaningless Trophy” and John "Gomez" Santoro was awarded the Most Improved Player trophy.

  • When did we start giving the least dis-improved award? Name one of the recipients. In 1984 we stopped improving. so we started giving the Least Dis-improved award.  Dan Mazanec and Klinger were the only Duffers that admitted getting that award before it was discontinued.

  • What year did Beak and his son Ken take a college course in Hockey? What grades did they earn? In the summer of 1980, Beak and his son Grandpa Ken signed up for a College of DuPage course in Hockey.  Beak got an A and his son got a B even though his slap shot lit up the radar gun at 95 MPH.  The radar gun was unable to read Beak's shot, but he had perfect attendance. (Ken's attendance was less than perfect)

Answers from 2 weeks Ago

  • Who had the first Duffer shut out? Who had the second one? Stump shut out the Blues 6-0 on January 25, 1990.  He Shut them out again on March 23 the same year with the same score!

  • What year did the Duffers have their first Thanksgiving game?  November, 27, 1980, after the 1980 Miracle on Ice, Wally Kraft made up 2 teams for the 1st Turkey Skate. He gave out hand outs with the teams on the Friday before.  It was a 12-3 blow out, as He stacked his team with young guns.

  • When was the King's Meaningless Trophy missing?  Who lost it? Who found it? Bill “Klinger” Giffune was awarded  the “King’s Meaningless Trophy” at The 1993 Picnic,  He kept it for 3 years. The trophy was so meaningless that no one could remember who had it. No one was awarded the trophy for 3 years until Klinger found it in his basement under a pile of Slider boxes. 2 of them still contained fossilized sliders!  Thor, Papa Joe and Harvey were given the meaningless trophy at the 1996 picnic to make up for the missing years.

  • How many more hits does the Duffer History page need to get to 10,000? The Duffer History page has 9,959 hits, you do the math.

Answers will be given at the Wednesday lunch.  If you can't wait, go to the Duffer History page.
