Duffer News Number 50

Founded

January 1972

Thank you Tony G.and Disco Bruce

The Santa of the year award goes to Disco Bruce and Tony Granato.  In the December 8th edition of the Green Bay Gazette, the following paragraph appeared:
"
Do you feel like playing Santa?  I have just the kid for you.  5 year old Taraun Cullie is fighting cancer. He has lost all of his hair but he still has a great smile.  His Mom, is a former student of mine, Please send a gift to:"
April Cullie
7249 S Paulina
Chicago, IL 60636
When I wrote that paragraph, I was just hoping a few Duffers would send 5 or 10 Bucks to help out.  Little did I know that that newsletter would find it's way into Tony's locker in San Jose.  (Thanks to Bob Friedlander.) Tony sent a check that was big enough to cover all of the Duffers.
"Disco Bruce" skated with us in the 1980s. His brother -in-law Thor brought him out.  Bruce got his nick name at the Duffer New year's Eve party on Dec. 31, 1979.  Bruce amazed us all with the way his flying feet carried his 270 pound frame gracefully through song after song on the dance floor.
Bruce answered the call for help in a different way.  He not only went to Taraun's "Hood", but he actually reported to the kid's "Crib" dressed as Santa and showered him with a tennis racquet, balls, gifts and Candy!

Meaningless Blowout

edged the Blues 12.7-12.  The Biggest scare came when Fred almost touched the twelfth goal before it went in.  Had he scored, the Bobka Factor would have upped the score to 144-3.  What a Game!
We Need 3 Lines
Remember This headline?  It appeared several times in September and October when the weather was nice. We have been getting 3 full lines lately, and that's great.  We appreciate all of the guest that have helped fill the gaps.
The Board of Directors has issued a new policy to protect dues paying members from more than 3 lines.   Tell your guest to sign in when they get there.  Once we have 30 skaters and 2 goalies, the last to arrive will be asked to leave, unless they can work out a sharing arrangement with another skater.

The first game of 1996 was a victim of the Muzzy factor.  Nobody with any Duffer seniority wanted to be on the Blue team as Muzzy tested the leg he lost in Green Bay.  The Duffer Database calculated the Average Age of the Blues at 36.6 years while the Whites tipped the calendar at a record 46.3 years.
At the end of the first period, the game was tied 2-2. The mature team was leading the meaningful score on a goal by Brinks Granato.  The mature guys were out of gas as the Muzzy Blues scored 8 unanswered Goals.  The 9.7 handicap was almost gone. No Hands John scored a meaningful goal late in the second.  The Game ended with a raw score of 12-3, 1-1 Meaningful, and Whites
