This is a great song about kids choosing up sides to play baseball. If your smart phone is not smart enough to play this background song, check it out on Youtube.

22 Goals on Friday the 13th!

Romeoville, IL
September 13, 2013

Attendance: 22

The Team Work Started on Thursday!
Team work started when the Goalie Pimp got word that none of his goalies wanted to play on Friday the 13th.  The Bookie, T&A, Rags and Beak started ringing door bells and making calls.  (Tweets, texts and e-mails too) Rob, our only goalie with perfect attendance said that he would play, so we had one.  Beak went to Center Ice to watch his grandson Jeff "Speed Racer" Lopatka

Wags fans; Miguel, (Future Goalie) Mel and Anna

play a late night Wags game.  He saw a 16 year old girl pulling goalie pads out to the parking lot.  Beak made sure his trench coat was closed then asked her if she wanted to play goalie on Friday the 13th.  She smiled and said, "Maybe, where is the game?" Beak told her that the game was in Romeoville and she replied that her mother wouldn't let her play there.  Beak chatted up another goalie in the lobby, but was rejected again.  When he took his seat in the stands, he saw Jeff's friend Miguel who was a fantastic baseball player and started to acquire goalie equipment with the hope of someday becoming a goalie.  Beak asked him if he wanted to play for the Duffers.  Miguel said that he had all of the equipment except for a helmet and a chest protector.  Beak told him that he would raid his son's hockey bag and bring those items to the rink.  While this was going on, Rags and T&A were busy getting some players to replace the guys that BBTW lured to Boston with a promise of free beer and $4:00 water.  T&A called on Friday to say that he had a goalie from Plainfield who would play goalie or skate out.  Beak told him to bring the kid and his pads just in case Miguel didn't work out.  That move saved the day when Goalie Rob showed up without his pads.
The Game turned out to be a barn burner with plenty of good and bad luck for all.
Klinger
scored the first goal for the Whites when he redirected a shot from Drew Collins (Guest of T&A) past Miguel. The puck went off of his skate, but the replay showed that there was no distinct kicking motion, so the goal was put on the board.  Drew put a couple shots past the rookie goalie to give the Whites a quick 3-0 lead.  Beak went over to Drew and told him about the Duffer Way.  He said he was sorry and that he would start passing to the old guys.  Boris, Nick  and Terry scored soon after that , so Beak took the bridle off of  his grandson Jeff so that the Reds could get back in the game.  Jeff quickly scored a pair then set up the Bookie and his grandpa to cut the score to 6-4.  Miguel started making some saves and the game settled down to a track meet.  He made one stick save while sweeping it out to the slot where Jeff took off for a clean break away,

but Rob made a great save and denied Miguel his first assist.  Terry and Drew scored again  to make it 8-4, so Jeff picked up his Hat Trick plus one more while assisting on the Bookie's second goal.

The Reds were right back in the game trailing 8-7, but the Maestro took a nap when Greg Z was entering the zone with speed.  Greg skated in unmolested and gave the Whites a 9-7 lead.  T&A, Greg and Nick added goals to give the Whites an even dozen.  The Reds made it close with 2 goals by Eric Johnson (Junior at Plainfield, HS) and his younger brother Brian.  Brian was the first Duffer to score while wearing goalie skates since The Anvil scored a hat trick in his pearly white skates.  Final Score:  Whites 12, Reds 10  Meaningful Score Whites 2, Reds 1

  • Memorable Moments:
Greg and Magoo are perfect.

  • Miguel had his goalie pads on the wrong legs, so he had a problem going down.
  • Robs goalie Pads were in his wife's car, many miles away, but we had him covered
  • The Maestro had bad luck wearing jersey number 13
  • Beak shot himself in the foot, but that was good luck because the puck went into the net for a goal.
  • The whole game was a memorable event that had teenagers playing with their dads, a guy in his twenties playing with his grandfather.  We had goals scored by sons, grandsons, dads and granddads. Three guys in their 70s scored goals!  This was Duffers Hockey at it's finest.
  • This night lived up to the 4 page spread in the Plainfield Enterprise by Robin Ambrosia.   http://www.lopatka.net//2013-Enterprise/2013-Enterprise.htm    We lived up to that 11 year old article "Puckish fun" By Lauren B. Kraft, where she wrote "For Duffers Hockey Team, the main goal is having a blast"  Read the article here: The cover of the SunĀ
