The ULTAMET Metal-on-Metal Articulation was designed and manufactured with the most sophisticated technology available and is coupled with the PINNACLE Acetabular Cup System for superior clinical performance.

Metal-on-metal articulation for total hip arthroplasty was originally introduced in the 1960s with implants such as the McKee-Farrar, Muller, Ring, Sivash and Stanmore prostheses. Metal-on-metal implants have survived in situ, often for more than 20 years, displaying minimal peri-implant osteolysis. ¹ The clinical issues limiting the success of these first generation metal-on-metal implants resulted primarily from poor implant design, a limited understanding of design technology and inadequate manufacturing processes. ¹

• Available in a 28 mm articulation and the first FDA-cleared 36 mm metal-on-metal articulation
• Patented shell/insert taper locking mechanism provides an integrated component, eliminating the need for a polyethylene interface
• Easily exchanged with MARATHON Cross-linked Polyethylene inserts without compromising polyethylene liner thickness or stability
• Used with clinically proven DePuy femoral stems, including AML, S-ROM, PRODIGY, CORAIL, TRI-LOCK, ENDURANCE and SOLUTION SYSTEM stems.²

Acetabular Cup System

DePuy introduces the PINNACLE Acetabular Cup System with patented Variable Interface Prosthesis (VIP) taper technology. The PINNACLE Acetabular Cup is designed to accommodate multiple advanced bearing materials and provide surgical options without compromise. Surgeons now have a choice between standard polyethylene, MARATHON Cross-linked Polyethylene and ULTAMET metal inserts, which all work within one acetabular shell.

The VIP taper, combined with a full 180 degrees of dome loading, provides superior congruency and enhances shell and polyethylene liner microstability. This same taper also functions as the metal insert locking mechanism. The PINNACLE System capitalizes on DePuy’s heritage of POROCOAT Porous Coating for fixation and the long-term clinical survivorship of the DURALOC Acetabular Cup System. These estab-lished characteristics, combined with patented engineering technology and precision manufacturing, create the first third-generation acetabular cup system. The PINNACLE Acetabular Cup System was designed to accommodate multiple advanced bearing surfaces to enable surgical alternatives without compromise.
The PINNACLE Shell accepts standard polyethylene liners, MARATHON Cross-linked Polyethylene liners and ULTAMET metal inserts.
