The Peoria Rivermen President John Butler confirmed this week that Head Coach Jason Christie would return to guide the team for the next two seasons. Last year Christie became the third head coach of Peoria's ECHL Franchise, following in the footsteps of Mark Reeds and Don Granato, the latter leading the team to its’ first ever Kelly Cup Championship. Christie, a professional hockey player since 1986 won 45 games in his inaugural coaching campaign. The Rivermen compiled 100 points enroute to their 3rd Northwest Division first place finish in four seasons. In the post season, Christie’s team advanced to the Northern Conference Finals against the ECHL’s regular season point champion Trenton and forced the Titans to a game seven, where Peoria fell with just 30 seconds left in regulation.
As a player, Christie amassed over 600 games, playing in the East Coast Hockey League, the now defunct International Hockey League and the American Hockey League. He last played for the Peoria Rivermen leading the team to the 2000 ECHL Kelly Cup Championship where he was named Co-MVP. Butler also announced this week that Assistant Coach Joe Trotta would return for his 2nd season  with Head Coach Jason Christie. Trotta became the franchise’s first ever full-time assistant coach following two years with the Indianapolis Ice as assistant coach, guiding the team to the Central  Hockey League Championship. Prior to his stint with the Ice, Trotta was the head coach for the Utah Jr. Grizzlies where his team finished with a 33-11-4 record and a berth in the league finals. Trotta  began his professional coaching career under Don Granato and the Columbus Chill in the ECHL (1997-1998). The Rivermen will open the season at home on Friday, October 12 when they host the  Richmond Renegades.
