Peoria 2/16/02

We will meet behind the Cracker Barrel Restaurant on Weber Road at 9:00 AM and leave for Peoria at 9:30.  We will skate on the Civic Center Ice at 12:30, have some food, then watch the Rivermen win at 7:00. Some guys are returning after the Duffer Game, see Stump.  Most guys are staying overnight.  Call Beak if you need a room and your name is not on the following list.

Beak, Hacksaw, Klinger, Tommy Z, Rich Storm, Beer nuts, Hitman, Beavis and Doc.

Da Game!

There was a thrilling game on Friday, February 8, Beer-nuts scored the winning Meaningful goal for the Reds.  Hitman put the game away when he took a pass from Tom Morgan and blew a one timer past the Ghost.

The Whites looked like they had the meaningful contest wrapped up when 9 year old, Ryan Dzingel, took his father's shift and scored 2 goals in the final minute to tie the game at 8*.  Ryan tied the youngest Duffer Goal record, held by a Duffer GOD Bobby Fetting.  Bobby broke Tweedy's record.**  Johnny Z and Mini-Wheezer had early goals for the Whites.  Papa Joe was trying to become the first 72 year old Duffer to score a goal.  His sons tried to set him up but they couldn't resist the open net as they each had a pair.

*Fred said that Bob Morgan was off side on the last goal.

**Tweedy beat Stump  when he was 10 years old on Mothers Day, 1981.

Olympic Pride-

The Following report came from the Rivermen web page

How ironic was it on Friday night as Cammi Granato walked the steps in Salt Lake City, the last woman in a long line of athletes, celebrities and dignitaries to carry the torch to its new resting place, was it that her cousin Kevin would at the same time be lighting up the scoreboard in Carver Arena with his game winning shootout goal ? He scored two goals, one shorthanded and added an assist on the only goal for Peoria he didn’t score to lead the Rivermen to victory. Granato, maybe the last in one of the most famous American Hockey Families ever to play professionally. Other members of his clan have included Tony Granato, with over 800 NHL games to his credit and Don, a two-year ECHL veteran who recently guided the Peoria Rivermen to the 2000 Kelly Cup Championship. Don is currently the Worcester (AHL) head coach and last season guided the St. Louis Blues AAA affiliate to the regular season AHL crown. Cammi lead the women’s Olympic team to a stunning upset in the Winter Games and a gold medal and is arguably the most recognized female hockey player in the World. And, they all come from Illinois, ironic that Kevin and Cammi were both in the lights on Friday night, Kevin in Peoria, Cammi in Salt Lake City.

At Bono's

We were all excited when we saw Cammi carry the Olympic torch up the stairs.  Hitman, Knarf, Klinger and Beak are headed to Salt Lake City after the Peoria game. (We play in Peoria on Saturday afternoon February 16, 2002.)

If you can't go to Salt Lake City, just go to Peoria.  RICK TELANDER SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST, gave the following report about Salt lake City; "En route, I observe this quiet city that, oddly, reminds me of my home town of Peoria, minus the Illinois River and Hiram Walker distillery."

Hacksaw was going to go until his wife, Mira, said she was going to spend as much money as he did while he was away.  He believes her, you may remember a few years back, Thor and Berserk got rich while Hacksaw was gone.  (That is when Thor got another name of "Contractor from Hell")

The staff at the Bolingbrook Sun is getting ready to run a cover story on the Duffer Hockey team in their March issue.  Be ready for interviews and pictures in the next few weeks.

Cammi is in this month's issue of Glamour magazine. I have started a folder of articles on Cammi in the 2002 Olympics.  Click here to go to the Articles.
