We missed the November 17-18 Leonid Meteor shower because of cloud cover, but the video above was captured by George Varros from Mount Airy, Maryland.  Jupiter is the big white dot that is not twinkling and the picture below was taken by Mike Boschat, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.  Isn't technology great!

Thanksgiving 11/23/00

These pictures capture the Duffer Thanksgiving.
We have fathers and sons and sons of sons all
joined together in a holy hockey day of obligation.
(Above) Beer nuts and his son Andy
(Below) Beak's sons Tweedy,  Ken, grandsons Mike and Jeff

Other Father son combos were Frank and Mike, (Below) Uncle Bob and Ben, Thor and Miller Lite and The King was draged out of bed by his son Jerry.  Jimmy served as our referee.  25 years ago, the King used to drag Jerry to the rink to referee for us. Five Duffers played 4 games in 8 days.  Hit man, Tin man, Rich Storm, Beak and Frank were topped only by Beak’s grandson Mike who played 5 games in 4 days, but only 2 of his games were played at Duffer speed.   The Thursday morning game was very exciting with Eddie the Anvil getting hammered before the game. (he broke out the gin and tonic)  Uncle Bob hammered him during the game.  (see the pictures below)
Beak had 2 more goals for the Whites thanks to  set ups by his son, Tweedy and grandson Mike.  (They rattled bullet passes off of him and friendly defensemen.)
The game was so intense, that Klinger grabbed his sticks and headed for the locker room after 2 periods.  He was hooked by his teammates and he played the third period.  The meaningless contest was more exciting than the meaningful score because Beak and Thor gave the Home team a comfortable 3-0  meaningful lead.
High schooler Terrence had 2, for the Blues, Miller Lite and Tommy Z had one each to give the Blues a 4-3 lead late in the 3rd when GOD, Mike Lopatka, tied it and his Dad Ken scored to take the lead.  Son of Beer-nuts, Andy, tied it at 5 until Johnny Z. hammered a slap shot past Eddie the Anvil for a 6-5 lead.
The Blues pulled the goalie to add a 6th attacker.  The strategy backfired as Mike Lopatka got a break away at the open net.  He crossed the blue line, stopped and waited for a meaningfull player.  Harvey took the pass and threaded a shot through 2 defenders and into the net for a 4-0 meaningful win.  Thor Miller’s goal was mildly disputed by the Blues when he appeared to be offside , but the King was refereeing and he was right on the blue line, (The other one) so there was no argument.  Gary The Ghost picked up the win.

Almost everyone had fun.

Friday 11/24/00

The Friday after Thanksgiving is better than Good Friday when you are a Duffer, because you get to play 2 games in 2 days.  The scoring was way down from the 12 goals that were tallied the day before.  There were no meaningful goals until the closing minutes of the game when the Blues defenders were preoccupied with Ken and his son Mike Lopatka.  Harvey slipped into the slot and poked a rebound past the rookie goalie for a 1-0 meaningful win.  The Meaningless game ended in a 4-4 tie.  Rich Storm got his own rebound and beat the Ghost for an early lead.  The Whites took a 2-1 lead on goals by Ken Lopatka and John Koss.  The King got an assist on Ken’s goal when he blocked a clearing pass that went right to Beak.  (Only in Duffers Hockey can you get credited with an assist while refereeing)  Beak passed to his son Ken who buried it.  Koss gave the Whites a 2-1 lead when he used a big Beak screen to score.  The Blues scored on the next three shifts to take a 4-2 lead.

Super Dave became a ghost buster when he fired a bullet past Gary "The Ghost" to tie the game.  Uncle Bob scored on the next shift for a 3-2 lead and Tommy Z made it 4-2 when he beat the Ghost.
It looked like the Whites were doomed when Mike Lopatka came to the rescue with a breakaway goal to get the Home team with in striking distance where Harvey could tie it and win it in the closing minutes.

Mike "The Nailer" is Hurt The Nailer will be out for a while He put a nail right in the pupil of his eye.  His doctor says it will be months before the stitches come out.  They had to remove the lens and there is too much damage for a normal artificial lens implant. A new lens will have to be stitched in, if that doesn’t work, they’re talking transplants.  The good news is his Doctor, Herb Becker might be a good Duffer.  Mike hopes to see us at Henry’s this week.
