Attendance 22  E-Report by Smitty

Whites Blow out the Reds!

The only E-Mail Duffer account for 09/30/05:
Starting Goalies  Ghost Vs. The Brain.

The Tim Smith E-Report: I scored two for the Whites. One with assists from Mike Presecki and Shawn Morgan and the other was a shot from behind off the back of the goalie's skate.  For the Reds, Bill Conti scored one with an assist from Tommy. Bill Conti, was a guest of T Smith. 1986 Marist grad and former varsity hockey player.  Hope this helps.      Tim

Thanks Tim, I sent the following e-request for help and I may have scared everyone else off:
I need your help again. If you want your accomplishments recorded in the Duffer News, send me a note by Monday.  Most of the scoring was over when I arrived in the 3rd period. When I walked in, I saw the Ghost turn Ghost White, when Art cranked a blistering slap shot at the him from 20 feet out. Thank God that the shot was high and wide.
This is what I heard at the bar and on the bench.

  • Hitman scored the only meaningful goals for the Whites. His new hair style makes him look 20 years older. Like a younger Harvey.
  • The ghost made a guest appearance.
  • 6 beer bucket night was well attended.
  • We were asked to leave the bar at 7:05 UT (Universal Time) That is just 10 hours before Solar Noon.
  • Plans are unfolding for a coach trip to Toronto via Buffalo on the first week end of March, 2006.
  • Each Team had 2 full lines
  • Fruit Cake was a minus 18
  • There was an early shameless offensive display by a chiseled Auto Mechanic teacher who was tired of being stoned last week.

I need more than this to fill a page. Maybe Tom Morgan can give me another colorful account of the game using the above information.

Cross-check this - Granato forced into early retirement

In 1996, about 20 colleges and universities offered varsity ice hockey for women.  Today that number has almost quadrupled.  Why?  Because young girls are being attracted to the sport in droves thanks in part to role models like Cammi Granato.  But what kind of message does it send to those aspiring Team USA'ers when they hear one of the best in the game isn't on the 2006 Olympic Team?

Video: 9News Sports Anchor Susie Wargin says Cammi Granato was a surprise cut from Team USA. 6 a.m. September 22, 2005.

Women's hockey at the highest level isn't like the men's.  If a player is cut in the NHL, he can try to catch on with another team.  In women's hockey, Team USA is one team and is the top rung on the ladder for females.  Once a woman is cut from Team USA, there is no where else to go.

Welcome to Cammi Granato's position right now.  The night before the Olympic rosters were released, the sport's all time leading scorer was told by her head coach, Ben Smith, that she was no longer a part of Team USA.  The shocking news came just after team tryouts in Lake Placid, where Cammi says she participated and used the tryouts as a warm up for Turino and the team's next trip, which would be Finland.  She had no idea her roster spot was in jeopardy.

Cammi says she never assumed she would have a spot on the roster, but the two-time Olympian, 15 year vet and captain of the team had no reason to believe she wasn't a sure thing.

Since being released, Cammi is trying to work through the hurt and not think about Turino.  She knows she could help her teammates recapture the gold and avenge for the silver they won in 2002.  She's heard from almost every single teammate either by phone or e-mail and to a girl, they also can't figure out why their leader would be released and in such abrupt fashion.

Perhaps circumstances will change over the next month.  Perhaps someone at the USOC or USA Hockey will question Ben Smith about his decision.  Until then, the sport's best known player will remain in what seems like a lifetime penalty box and start early retirement.
